Wishlists Redesign and Upcoming Collection Changes

Update5 min read

Wishlists went through a redesign. But before we get into how wishlists work right now, I want to take a step back into the past to explain why I designed them the way I did, and why I am overhauling them now.

A bit of history

When I initially started working on MythicHub almost 5 years ago, I was using a combination of Deckbox and Moxfield to track my collection and decks. I liked Deckbox for my collection management and Moxfield for decks. But the Deckbox deckbuilder was lacking, and I always thought that Moxfield collections and wishlists were quite limiting. My idea was, and still is, that deckbuilding and collection management should be connected. While building a deck you need to know which cards you already own or have on a wishlist, and the other way around as well: while browsing your collection, it's helpful to know which decks use those cards and if you own other copies or printings.

My idea was simple: collection, wishlist and tradelist all share their logic, because they are all binders. You can have as many binders of as many types as you want, and you select which marketplace is the source for prices. Back then my approach was to keep everything simple. I still think that this was the correct approach back then, but the app has outgrown those ideas now.

One of the biggest limiting factors right now, I think, is that you need to select a specific marketplace for each binder. MythicHub supports 4 marketplaces: TCGplayer, Mana Pool, Cardmarket and Card Kingdom. Depending on where you're from, it's useful to switch between marketplaces to compare prices. Some time ago I added a marketplace switcher to the app's top navigation. It works everywhere, well, except binders.

Before: collection, wishlist and tradelist binders, each locked to one marketplace. Now: wishlists are separate and show their value on all four marketplaces. Next: one collection that holds owned, for trade and sold cards.

Wishlists are now separate from binders

Wishlists are now a separate entity next to the collection. They are available in the new Collect menu in the top navigation, next to Collection. The price tools that used to be in that menu (Market Trends, Expected Value and Price Alerts) moved to their own Market menu.

You are no longer forced to select one marketplace for a wishlist. It now shows you the overall value across all marketplaces, so you can compare the prices at a glance. Card prices still show the price for the active marketplace, but it's easy to change in the top navigation.

Here is how it looks when you switch the marketplace. The total, the top movers and every card price change, and the active marketplace moves to the top of the list:

Wishlists also got a new look. On the Wishlists page every wishlist is now a card with a strip of card art on top, and the wishlist page has a matching header. If you support MythicHub on Patreon at the Uncommon tier or higher, you can pick the cover art with Customize appearance, and it shows up on the card, in the header and on your public profile. Without a cover you will see a fan of placeholder cards instead.

What else changed

A few smaller things changed together with the redesign:

  • Value card. You can see how the value changed in the last 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days, and which card went up and which went down the most. If a marketplace has no price for some cards, you will see how many cards are unpriced next to it.
  • Cards or table. Every wishlist on the Wishlists page shows its value for your selected marketplace, how many cards it has and when it was last updated. If you prefer a list, you can switch to the table view and the page will remember it. The Collection page got the same cards and table.
  • Desired price. The desired price is just a number, without a currency. If you set $3 and switch to Cardmarket, it shows as 3€. The current price is green when it's below your desired price and orange when it's above.
  • Paper cards only. Wishlists now track paper cards only. Your Arena and MTGO wishlists were moved too, but cards that don't have a paper printing were left out.
  • No extra info. Wishlist cards no longer have extra info like signed, altered or graded. If your cards had it, I added it to the card notes, so you don't lose it.
  • No value chart, for now. The wishlist value chart is gone. I want to bring trends back in a better form together with the collection changes.
  • No combined views. Wishlists can't be part of combined binder views anymore.
  • Old links still work. Links to your old wishlist binders open the new wishlist page.

Everything else you used before is still there: importing, the Optimize and Buy Cards buttons, bulk edit, deduplication, history, merging, sharing, and adding missing cards from a deck to a wishlist. In the deckbuilder, missing cards that are on your wishlists are still marked purple. Your public profile also has a new Wishlists tab. You can read more about all of it on the Wishlists help page.

What's next for your collection

Wishlists are only the first part of a bigger redesign I am planning across all binder types. Since I initially created binders with the collection and tradelist types, I also added a bigger feature that I think a lot of people are missing because it's not very visible: sold cards. Sold cards sit in a collection binder and let you track your realized P/L. But it always felt awkward having multiple binders, for different marketplaces and so on. I always thought that tradelists should also be done differently. After all, cards you want to trade are still part of your collection and should count towards your collection value. So I created combined views, but honestly it always felt more like a workaround than a proper solution.

In the near future I will update how collection and tradelists work. All remaining types of binders (collection, tradelist and sold cards) will become part of a unified collection. You will have one collection that holds all of your cards: collection cards, sold cards and tradelist cards. Binders will still be there as an option (I still need to figure out the details, so don't quote me on that). I also want the collection to support switching marketplaces in exactly the same way wishlists do. This also opens up numerous new improvements, like better trends for the collection, set completion and more, but I will write more on those when the time comes!

Thank you

Thank you for being part of the MythicHub community and for providing feedback! All of this wouldn't be possible without you! It's been a hell of a ride working on and maintaining this app, and I am very grateful to everyone who took the time to check it out and is using it to manage their collection and build their decks. It means a lot to me! If you'd like to support the project, please check the Patreon box below, there are some fun customization perks :)
