Foundations Commander precons: which one is worth buying?

Foundations Commander decklists are finally revealed, and it has been a while since we had mono-colored Commander decks. I checked and the most recent one is the Warhammer 40k mono-black Necron Dynasties deck that was released in 2022. Before that, the last mono-colored precons were the Commander 2014 precons! We had to wait 12 years to get a full set of mono-colored Commander precons!

The decklists look great to me. Tribal decks are always popular, and I think mono-colored commanders are underrated. I'm a player first, though. I don't see Magic cards as an investment, and this post is not financial advice. I want to see whether these decks make sense to buy for playing Commander or adding useful cards to a collection. The decks are not out yet, so I have no idea how well they actually play against each other or other precons.

Some basic info: Foundations Commander has five precons, one for each color. They release on October 2, 2026, and each has a US MSRP of $29.99. Each box contains a 100-card deck, a foil borderless commander, tokens, a reference card, and a deck box. Every card in these decks is a reprint, so the reprint value is pretty much the whole story here.

The short version, based on prices on September 23, before release: at $29.99, every one of these decks pays for itself in reprints. In the US, preorders are going for about $40 to $50 right now, though. At those prices, Tramplesaurus Rex is the clear value pick, Calling All Angels is the one I'd wait on, and Wretched Ranks is the one I'm buying anyway.

Calling All Angels

I'll be honest: I was never interested in Angels as a tribe, and lifegain is kind of meh for me. It's not my aesthetic or my type of gameplay. I understand why people love them, though, and gives them exactly what they want. My worry with decks like this is what happens later in the game. If your Angels get removed or the board is wiped, you're left topdecking and playing whatever you draw.

There are still reprints here I'm happy to see. I like , and I have a sweet spot for , because she used to be my finisher back in the day when I played UW control in Modern.

is in this deck too. It appears in four of these precons, so keep that overlap in mind if you plan to buy more than one.

Price-wise, this is the odd one. On September 23 it had the highest preorder price ($50.03 on TCGplayer) and the lowest total of $5+ reprints ($31.11). I'm not sure if that's Giada's popularity or Angel fans, but if you're buying it for the reprints, I'd wait.

Keen Engineering

I love blue, but mono-blue artifacts feels like such a tired archetype. There is nothing exciting about this deck for me: no surprises, just the staple cards you would expect from the archetype. If you've never had an artifact deck, that might be exactly what you want from . It's just not a deck I'm excited about.

The reprints are the better part for me. is my favorite one here, and is a staple if you ever plan to build a colorless deck. made the list because its rules text is fun and unique.

Reign of Dragons

I know someone could say the same thing about Dragons that I said about the previous two decks. But when Dragons work, they work really well! I like casting big creatures with haste that do something the moment they're played, and is built around exactly that.

used to be my pet card, and it's in here because it's a changeling, so it counts as a Dragon. can give you a second wind after you've played your whole hand, and can lead to explosive turns. I also just love discover and cascade, so I was happy to see .

Tramplesaurus Rex

Green Dinosaurs just seem like a really solid deck. There's not much to say here: you ramp and cast big creatures, and rewards you for doing exactly that.

I love , mostly because I love Planar Chaos, where it was first printed. is always a solid card. I didn't know was such an expensive card, so that's a solid reprint too.

This is also the value pick. On September 23, its $5+ reprints added up to $71.47, compared with a $44.95 preorder price on TCGplayer, and its $2+ reprints came to $114.36, the most of all five decks.

Wretched Ranks

This is my personal pick. I have been thinking about building a mono-black Commander deck for quite some time. Out of all the colors, I like black the most because it has so many tools and spells that help with the limits of playing one color. It cannot answer everything, but card draw, removal, and ways to bring creatures back give me plenty to work with.

I also really like when a deck has a backup plan if the board gets wiped, and this one has it. A lot of these Zombies can come back from the graveyard (hello, !). That's exactly what I miss in decks like Calling All Angels.

is an all-star in mono-black decks. is not as powerful as it once was, but it's still a solid card. I like because I used to play it in Standard when it was legal there. And I just love the Nils Hamm art on .

It also helps that it was the cheapest preorder on September 23 ($41.99 on TCGplayer), with the second-highest $2+ reprint total ($90.60). My pick for fun turns out to be good value too.

This is the one I would choose as a starting point for the mono-black deck I've wanted to build.

Which deck would I choose?

For me, it would be Wretched Ranks. I like having a backup plan when the board gets wiped, and the idea of building mono-black matters more to me than picking whichever deck has the biggest price total.

If you're buying for value, Tramplesaurus Rex is the one, based on September 23 prices. If you're buying Calling All Angels for the reprints, I'd wait for the price to come down. And at $29.99, any of the five pays for itself in reprints, so if you find one at MSRP, you get your money's worth either way.

If you're still deciding, open any of the decklists and click Optimize. It shows the cheapest way to build the deck from singles, so you can compare it with the sealed price.

I'm happy we finally have another full set of mono-colored Commander precons. Wretched Ranks is the one I'm most interested in, but all five lists look good to me. We still need to see how they play. For now, they've made me want to finally build that mono-black deck.

How I priced this

Only the printings in these decks are new, and they don't have TCGplayer prices yet. So for every card, I used its cheapest English, black-bordered, nonfoil paper printing on TCGplayer. The List counts; foil, borderless, gold-bordered, non-English and Art Series cards don't. Sometimes that makes the cheapest version an odd promo, and you'll see that in the tables.

The two totals add up the cards worth $5 or more, and the cards worth $2 or more (including the $5 ones). They show how much of a deck's value sits in a few expensive cards. They're not the cost of the whole deck, and they don't include shipping, fees, or what you'd actually get from selling the cards. Cardmarket prices are in euros, so compare them with the sealed price in euros.
