Foundations Commander precons: Decklists, prices and reprint value

Foundations Commander decklists are finally revealed! From what I saw, it seems that those products created a lot of interest, so I thought it might be a good opportunity to look into the reprint value of those decks.

The decklists look great to me. Tribal decks are always popular and it has been a while since we had mono-colored Commander decks, and I think mono-colored commanders are underrated. I checked and the most recent mono-colored Commander deck is the Warhammer 40k mono-black Necron Dynasties deck that was released in 2022. Before that, the last mono-colored precons were the Commander 2014 precons! We had to wait 12 years to get a full set of mono-colored Commander precons!

As for the financial analysis, I want to state that I'm a player first. I don't see Magic cards as an investment, and this post is not financial advice. I want to take a look at whether these decks make sense to buy for playing Commander or adding useful cards to a collection. The decks are not yet out, so I have no idea how well they actually play against each other or other precons.

Some basic info: Foundations Commander has five precons, one for each color. They release on October 2, 2026, and each has a US MSRP of $29.99. Each box contains a 100-card deck, a foil borderless commander, tokens, a reference card, and a deck box.

How I compare the reprint prices

The new Foundations Commander specific cards/printings do not have TCGplayer prices at the time of writing. This article will focus on the reprint value, so I looked for each card's cheapest English, black-bordered, nonfoil paper printing with a TCGplayer price. The List counts. Gold-bordered, borderless, non-English, foil and Art Series are excluded.

This is a comparison with other printings you could buy as singles. Keep in mind that it does not price the exact cards in the box, including the foil borderless commander.

I show two totals. One adds the cards priced at $5 or more. The other adds the cards priced at $2 or more, including those already in the $5 total. Neither is the cost of buying the whole deck. The counts below each breakdown also show how many nonbasic cards fall below $1, from $1 to below $2, from $2 to below $5, and at $5 or more. Cards without a proper price are counted separately. Those cutoffs help us see how much of the total value comes from a few expensive cards.

The totals and price groups use TCGplayer prices in US dollars. Cardmarket and the other card prices shown beside them are for the same selected printing. They may have cheaper versions of their own. Cardmarket prices are in euros, so I would compare them with the sealed price in euros, not with the dollar totals.

Prices can change, especially around a reprint. The components show when the comparison was updated. These numbers do not include shipping, taxes, or the costs of selling cards, and they are not an estimate of what you could earn by selling a deck's contents.

If you want to check the cost of building a precon from singles yourself, open one of the decklists above and click Optimize. Choose your preferences, then preview the deck with the cheapest available printings that match them. It's a handy way to compare the full list with the sealed price.

Calling All Angels

leads the white deck. If you ever wanted to build Angels, having the commander and a selection of Angels together is a good starting point to look at.

reduces the cost of Angel spells, while rewards you for gaining life. gives you a way to add more counters when your commander enters or attacks. These are cards I would look at for their role in an Angel deck, not only for their price.

There are also cards with uses outside Angels. and can go into other white Commander decks. offers card draw for a mono-colored deck. It appears in four of these precons, so keep that overlap in mind if you plan to buy more than one.

Keen Engineering

creates a Thopter whenever you cast an artifact spell. His card draw is a separate ability. You pay two mana and sacrifice two artifacts to draw a card. That gives the list a clear artifact theme, though I would want to play it before saying how well it comes together.

rewards artifact spells with card draw, and lets you exchange an artifact on the battlefield for one in your hand. is another card worth a look if you like having a response during combat.

Many of these cards could move into other artifact decks later. and are useful outside artifact decks too.

Reign of Dragons

leads the red deck and creates Dragon tokens when other nontoken Dragons enter under your control. Looking through this list, I would start with the cards that support having several Dragons on the battlefield.

, , and all give you reasons to look at the decklist. is useful to consider for other decks with large creatures too.

If you are starting a Dragon deck, several of these cards may be useful together. If you already have one, I would compare the singles you are missing with the sealed price.

Tramplesaurus Rex

is the green commander. Its cost goes down as the total power of your creatures goes up, so the list's focus on large creatures makes sense on paper.

The cards that interest me here are useful beyond a deck led by . is one of the best mana dorks. offers card draw when you cast creature spells. gives your other creatures trample and can give new creatures haste.

and are worth checking too. What interests me most here is how many of these cards I could use in other creature decks.

Wretched Ranks

This is my personal pick. I have been thinking about building a mono-black Commander deck for quite some time. Out of all the colors, I like black the most because it has so many tools and spells that help with the limits of playing one color. It cannot answer everything, but card draw, removal, and ways to bring creatures back give me plenty to work with.

leads this deck. She sacrifices another creature to make Zombie tokens equal to that creature's power. The list has plenty of Zombies to look through, including , , and .

I am also interested in the cards I could use if I later took the deck in a different direction. offers card draw, and rewards black creatures entering under your control. can deal with a creature or an enchantment. That last option is the sort of tool I like seeing in mono-black.

This is the one I would choose as a starting point for the mono-black deck I've wanted to build.

Which deck would I choose?

For me, it would be Wretched Ranks. The idea of building mono-black interests me more than picking whichever deck has the biggest price total.

If you are choosing your first Commander deck, I would start with the commander and theme you want to try. If you already have a collection, look through the decklist and check what you are missing. A precon can make sense when you want much of the list. Buying singles may make more sense when you only want a few cards.

I'm happy we finally have another full set of mono-colored Commander precons. Wretched Ranks is the one I'm most interested in, but all five lists look good to me. We still need to see how they play. For now, they've made me want to finally build that mono-black deck.
